A tankless water heater has a sensor that sends a signal to the water heater unit once a hot water tap on a shower or sink is opened and hot water is “requested”. Once that signal is received, the unit begins to warm the water using either a gas flame or electricity. When the hot water tap is closed, the unit stops heating water and will not resume until the next time a hot water tap is opened.
This sounds like a pretty simple system and, for the most part, it is, but don’t be fooled. Even though there is nothing particularly complicated about tankless water heaters they still offer quite the long list of benefits and advantages to homeowners who use them.
The benefits that a tankless water heater offers
Here are some of the advantages that a tankless water heater provides to homeowners:
- They work on demand: As we detailed above, a tankless hot water heater only works on demand. When hot water is requested the unit heats it up. The warming process stops when a hot water tap is closed. What this ultimately means is that they are not expelling energy to warm water when taps on a sink or bath are closed. This helps reduce what a homeowner spends on his or her utility bills and energy costs.
- They provide an endless supply of hot water: Tankless water heaters give you peace of mind that there will be enough hot water to go around for everyone who lives in your home. No one has to worry that there won’t be any hot water left if they are the last to shower for the day!
- They can free up room in a home: Thanks to the fact that they are small and compact, tankless water heaters can help save homeowners about 12 square feet of floor space within their homes.
- They are efficient: Compared to tank water heaters, a tankless option is about 22% more efficient and is able to warm water at a faster speed. They also happen to be twice as fast as electric heaters.
- They eliminate standby heat loss: Because a tank water heater continuously reheats unused water there is a substantial amount of standby heat loss involved. Since tankless water heaters only heat water on demand, there is virtually no standby heat loss. This equates to a pretty nice cost savings for homeowners!
- They have a long lifespan: A tankless water heater that is well maintained and cared for can last a homeowner anywhere from about 15 to 20 years. Not only can you count on them in the longevity department, but they also typically don’t need frequent repairs over the years.
