We’re honored to serve Quemado, New Mexico

Catron County was the site of some of the earliest human settlements in the Americas, dating back many thousands of years BC. The Spanish named Quemado using the word for burned, which likely refers to the extinct volcanic area on which this community sits. In 1880, José Antonio Padilla began raising sheep here, beginning the livestock industry in our part of New Mexico. Indeed, Quemado became a destination of sorts for rodeo celebrities.

Between Quemado and Pie Town, you can find The Lightning Field, an art installation by the sculptor Walter De Maria. This work was commissioned and is maintained by the Dia Art Foundation. It consists of 400 stainless-steel poles arranged in a one-mile-by-one-kilomater grid. While the installation is intended to attract lightning, this rarely occurs. The Lightning Field was erected in 1977 and is said to have inspired the enigmatic epilogue to Cormac McCarthy’s western epic Blood Meridian.
