Sierra Propane’s Magdalena branch is staffed with local experts who know this region and are dedicated to serving your home comfort needs. Our services include the following:
Originally, the region was a hunting ground for several Indian tribes. Our town, incorporated by Europeans as Magdalena Peak in 1884, was known as Trails End. This referred to the railroad spur line built by the New Mexico Railroad Company to accommodate the burgeoning smelting industry in Socorro County. The railroad also proved beneficial for the cattle and wool industries in the region.
In the post-World War II era, the area’s mines were spent, and the arrival of cattle trucks effectively ended cattle drives around Magdalena. Overgrazing saw the diminishment of the wool trade. Yet the village persevered. When the nearby mining community of Kelly closed down, many of those families settled in our village. By the 1970s, the highway had replaced the Magdalena-Socorro spur railway.
Today, Magdalena still has craft stores, a theatre, a local library and a Forestry Service office (the village’s longest-lasting employer). Residents and visitors alike enjoy the Old Timers’ Reunion and Frontier Festival and the ghost town of Kelly.
