There are plenty of things for us to worry about come winter. We have to make sure that we are thoroughly prepared for any severe snowstorms that may be coming our way, we have to carve out the time to shovel and de-ice our walkways and driveways and we have to anticipate heavier than normal traffic due to tough road conditions. Fortunately, your propane supply doesn’t have to be one of the numerous things you need to be concerned about throughout the winter. Your propane tank, on the other hand, requires a little extra attention and care once the temperatures drop.
The short answer to this question is not very much.
Propane’s freezing point is all the way down at -306.4 degrees Fahrenheit so it is highly unlikely to freeze. The cold weather also won’t make your propane degenerate or expire either. It is pretty naturally protected from chilly temperatures and you’ll be able to rely upon it all winter long.
Cold weather doesn’t have an impact on your fuel, but it can have an impact on your propane tank. Specifically, your tank’s pressure is what is affected.
As it gets colder outside, propane decreases in volume and contracts. This causes the internal pressure of a propane tank to drop.
As a result, your propane might not be able to reach the burners of your gas-fired equipment (this mostly only happens when temperatures are extremely cold for a long time). Low tank pressure may also contribute to false and inaccurate readings on your tank’s gauge.
Following the below tips will help stabilize your propane tank’s pressure throughout the winter:
