Follow these tips to stay warm this winter
Despite it getting quite warm here in Arizona and New Mexico during the summer, it also happens to get fairly chilly once the winter season hits. But this doesn’t mean you have to be cold and uncomfortable when you’re in your home. In addition to counting on your boiler or furnace for comfort, there are actually some things you can do to help your home heating system accomplish its job.
Using your home heating system effectively
It wouldn’t surprise us if at one point or another you have had your home’s heating running, but felt like it wasn’t really working. This is all too common of a problem.
That is why Sierra Propane has put together the below tips that can help your home heating system work efficiently and battle the cold temperatures.
- Don’t let heat escape your home: You can keep the heat that comes out of your home heating system in your house by sealing up any drafts you might have around windows, doors, chimneys or ductwork. Just add a bit of caulking, door sweeps and/or weather stripping.
- Use the sun to your advantage: You don’t have to increase the temperature on your thermostat to increase the temperature in your home. You can use the natural sunlight instead! Open your home’s curtains and blinds every morning to add a little heat to your house. Once the sun sets, close your curtains and blinds to hold onto the heat that is coming from your home heating system.
- Install an extra layer of insulation: Adding an additional layer of insulation to your home makes it both warmer and more energy efficient.
- Don’t block vents: Household objects like furniture, curtains and dust can block your vents and keep warm air from properly flowing through your home so make sure your vents are clear of any potential obstructions.
- Switch out your air filter: A clogged and dirty air filter can also keep warm air from flowing properly and will also make your heating system work harder than it needs to in order to keep your house warm. Clean your air filters on a regular basis and change them when necessary.
- Use a programmable thermostat: Programmable thermostats let you control the temperature of your home even while you’re not actually at home. So instead of not having your home’s temperature turned up while you’re out for a full day in an effort to conserve spending and returning to a home that is uncomfortably cold, a programmable thermostat lets you increase the temperature when you’re on your way home. This means you get to open the door to a perfectly warm house!
- Don’t skip out on routine maintenance: Regular maintenance and servicing visits conducted by a professional are really the only way to know that your home heating system is working as efficiently as possible. In fact, heating systems that aren’t professionally maintained can lose up to 5% of their efficiency a year.
